The Redfern Computer Centre helps disadvantaged people from inner Sydney to build skills in the use of computers, the Internet and associated technologies. These services are provided free of charge to Aboriginal children, families and job seekers as a priority; however other members of the local community are also welcomed.

The aim of the Centre is to provide ‘IT equity’ to people who may never otherwise have the employment, educational and social opportunities that these skills bring.

The Centre operates from a 20 PC venue in the heart of Redfern. It includes both drop-in facilities for those who need to use computers for study or job hunting, after school homework assistance and regular structured courses covering introductory computer skills that are tailored for local users and provide qualifications for employment and further study.

Other courses covering essentials such as basic graphic design, web design, use of Photoshop and other major software programs are also offered. They are taught either in house or by tutors from external organisations.

Digital technology now pervades almost every aspect of day-to-day life – and nowhere more so than in the realms of education and employment. The rapid pace of change means the Centre is in constant need of upgrades in hardware, software and for trained personnel to pass on skills to those who would otherwise be left behind.

The Redfern Computer Centre was formed by the efforts and funding of private individuals. While it is now run as a partnership, with South Sydney Youth Services and Work Ventures providing some staffing and related administrative services, the Redfern Foundation remains its sole cash funding body.

Only through support from the community can the Redfern Computer Centre continue to provide an accessible, relevant service to the people it serves.
